The Getaway
Pop-Up Escape Room

Client

DDB is an full-service marketing and communications agency with offices across Canada. They pride themselves on being highly creative and innovative in the advertising world.

DDB’s client was BC Dairy. BC Dairy works to grow the market for dairy products and to support profitable, environmentally and socially responsible dairy farm businesses.

  • DDB asked us to create a pop-up escape room which would be operated for two weeks to attract media attention to BC Dairy.

The theme was “escaping adult responsibilities” so naturally a big part of the challenge was making the activities associated with being an adult, which aren’t very fun, fun again!

A significant challenge was designing when the final space was unknown, since a pop-up space had not been selected at the time the project began.

  • Due to the many constraints of the project and the visual nature of the clients, we decided to invest heavily in visual renderings of the game as we designed it.

We also tackled the challenge of making the mundane fun again by incorporating tech-driven and audio puzzles into the game. Those headphones sitting on the table? Use them!

As advertising can be, a challenge is simply working with a variety of stakeholders. This time they were 2,000 miles away from us, but it turned out to be great practice for the remote work of pandemic!

  • The game was a big hit with players and a darling with local media. An under $5,000 media spend yielded over 1,000,000 impressions for the client. Not bad for an escape room!
