Their online offerings remain sporadic; their Internet strategies feel like “we have to” rather than “we want to”; and — worst of all — they still haven’t embraced the idea that we are living in a new digital world, with different rules, participants, and expectations all around.

We’ve looked at the online offerings of the five major networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and The CW — and sadly no one is blowing the game wide open, although they’re trying. To their credit, the networks are offering some of their top-rated shows online, viewable on their own websites.

HBO and Showtime are both catching on to this whole “internet” fad far better than a lot of other broadcasters. One is buying up content made online while the other is generating content online.

HBO has purchased a machinima video made entirely in Second Life. The video was originally conceived to be sold to broadcasters, but things went great quickly when the first episode was released online by accident. A bidding war commenced and clearly HBO won.

New World Notes, a site dedicated to Second Life, covers the story and they interviewed the creator:

Because of all this and Gayeton’s relations in the film industry (more on those later), the HBO deal might very well be a disruptive one, transforming SL machinima into an accepted tool for established filmmakers.

On the other hand, Showtime is promoting their show Weeds online by asking fans to submit an introduction to the show. Ever episode of Weeds begins with a different artist performing the song “Little Boxes”. Artists such as Regina Spektor and Death Cab for Cutie have done their reditions of the song. Now they want homegrown stuff, that is they want you to make your own rendition of “Little Boxes”.

When it comes to the user generated intros, the one inspired by Daft Punk is the best.

Today I have started to write a very short screenplay and got to wondering about how to actually write one. I’ve discovered a few writing applications (which will be reviewed on here later) and I’ve found websites that I think will be useful to anyone wanting to enter any sort of entertainment writing in Canada.

First up is the Professional Writers Association of Canada, and they want your money. They would very much like it if you became a member of their association. The benefits include getting listed in their directory and being able to attend their professional development workshops. At the same time, they are also run Writers.ca which has fee guidelines.

The PWAC blog is updated with relevant industry news frequently. You don’t need to be a member to read the blog.

Copyright information in the digital age is still being figured out and it’s important to stay abreast of developments in this area. Luckily people are doing this for the Canadian public. Digital Copyright Canada cares about what’s going on, so does Michael Giest.

For general tips on writing there is always the Crafty TV Writing FAQ. I’m sure Google will also provide the confused with some guidance too.

Worried that writers, like the rest of the Canadian film industry, are in less demand? Well, tomorrow Toronto is set to make an announcement on this very issue.

MIPCOM is an annual event that connects people working in entertainment so they can sell and purchase new projects, and best of all it happens in Cannes this October.

MIPCOM is best described on their site:

MIPCOM is the global content event for co-producing, buying, selling, financing and distributing entertainment content across all platforms. It provides the key decision-makers in the TV, film, digital and audiovisual content, production and distribution industry with the only market conference and networking forum to discover future trends and trade content rights on a global level.

Sounds pretty impressive! Indeed it is, they expect over 12,500 attendees and more than 4,000 companies.

MIPCOM has a sister event named MIPTV that happens in the spring (yes, also in Cannes) that is focused on the same things as MIPCOM. It appears that MIPCOM covers more territory though. Also in April is MIPDOC for documentaries – if you couldn’t tell from the name alone.

For shows focused on the younger demographics, MIPCOM Junior is the place to be. It is a shorter event that happens just before MIPCOM begins in October.
