Crackle is a site that is owned by Sony that has the one goal of finding new talent. Members of Crackle, formerly known as Grouper which was bought by Sony for $65 million last year, submit their video content in the hopes that it’ll be discovered by someone at Sony as the next big thing. Videos are categorized into certain channels for your viewing and advertising pleasure.
The Hollywood Reporter has an examination of the site, the quotes below are from their article.
Crackle offers viral Web distribution across such sites as MySpace, Facebook and AOL along with the option to view content on such Sony platforms as the Sony PSP, Sony VAIo and Sony BRAVIA.
Sony has realized that distributing content for free is actually a good idea!
People who create really good stuff collect rewards that are generally focused on the primary medium of what they made. It also gets Sony more brains.
For example, winners of Wet Paint’s (the site’s animation channel) quarterly contest will garner a cash prize and a chance to pitch Sony Pictures Animation executives with a concept for a future animated short that could be theatrically released.
